The Harris County Sheriff's Office runs an online Inmate Information Center at harriscountyso.org/JailInfo. This portal lets you search for anyone currently held in the Harris County Jail system. You can search by System Person Number (SPN), last name alone, last name plus first name, or last name combined with date of birth. The SPN is an eight-digit number unique to each person in the Harris County jail system.

Each booking record in the system shows the person's current custody status, booking date and time, charges filed, bond amounts, next scheduled court date, and housing location within the jail. The portal is available around the clock, though new bookings may not appear for up to two hours after intake while processing is completed.

Harris County also participates in the VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) system. If you want automatic alerts when an inmate's custody status changes, you can register at VINELink Texas or call the toll-free VINE line at 1-(877) 894-8463. This service is free and sends alerts by phone, email, or text.

The sheriff's site also has a Warrants Search for Class A and Class B misdemeanor warrants. That tool is separate from the inmate search. Both are accessible from the main Harris County Sheriff's Office website.

To check whether someone is currently in custody, call the Inmate Information Center at (713) 755-5300 or use the online portal. For booking records, incident reports, or other documents, submit a written request to the Records Division. Requests can go in by mail, email, or in person at 1200 Baker Street.

Copy fees are $0.10 per page for standard copies. Certified copies carry an additional fee. For large requests, the office may require a deposit before processing. The office has 10 business days to respond to written requests under the Texas Public Information Act.

Note: Written records requests by mail should go to Harris County Sheriff's Office, ATTN: Records Division, 1200 Baker Street, Houston, TX 77002. Include the full name, date of birth, and approximate date of the incident when known.

What Harris County Booking Records Contain

When someone is arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, a booking record is created. That record is public under the Texas Public Information Act. Harris County booking releases typically include the person's full name, date of birth, physical description, charges filed, bond amount per charge, arresting agency, booking date and time, housing location, and next scheduled court date. Release information is added once the person leaves custody.

Some records are exempt from public release. Active criminal investigation files, juvenile records, medical and mental health information, and child abuse investigation records are generally withheld. If a request touches exempt material, the Sheriff's Office may seek a ruling from the Texas Attorney General before releasing or withholding the records.

A booking record does not mean the person was convicted. Under Texas law, an arrest occurs when a peace officer takes a person into custody. The record reflects that event, not a finding of guilt. Harris County booking releases are government documents that carry no implication of criminal liability beyond the act of being detained.

Harris County District Clerk records are separate from jail booking records. The District Clerk at 201 Caroline Street, Houston, TX 77002 handles felony court filings, judgments, and case histories. Those records reflect what happened in court, not at booking. If you need both the arrest record and the court outcome, you will need to contact both offices.

State Resources for Harris County Inmate Searches

If the person you are looking for is serving a sentence in a Texas state prison rather than the county jail, use the TDCJ Offender Search run by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. You can search by last name and first initial, TDCJ number, or state ID number. The TDCJ system covers all state-operated prison units across Texas and does not include county jail inmates.

For full criminal history records, the Texas DPS Crime Records Division offers name-based and fingerprint-based searches. A name search costs $10 and takes about 10 business days. A fingerprint-based search costs $15 plus a $10 FAST fingerprinting fee and gives a more complete history. You need an account on the DPS records portal to submit a request.

Court records for Harris County cases can be searched through reSearchTX, the Texas court records portal run by the Office of Court Administration. This is a good way to find case numbers, disposition data, and hearing dates tied to a specific arrest. Most Harris County district and county court records are accessible here.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards oversees all county jails in Texas, including the Harris County Jail. Their site publishes population reports and inspection records for county jail facilities statewide. The Harris County Jail is one of the largest in the country and its inspection reports are available through the TCJS database.

Texas Public Information Act and Booking Records

Arrest and booking records in Texas are public information under Texas Government Code Chapter 552, the Public Information Act. Any person can request these records from the Harris County Sheriff's Office. You do not need to give a reason. The office has 10 business days to respond to written requests, though complex requests may take longer.

Basic custody status is available free by phone or through the online portal. For copies of records, standard fees apply at $0.10 per page. If fees will exceed a set threshold, the office must notify you and get your approval before processing. You can also ask for a fee waiver if you can show that release of the records is in the public interest.

Requests can go in by mail, email, fax, or in person. The Harris County Sheriff's Office must either provide the records, deny the request with a legal reason, or seek a ruling from the Texas Attorney General's office within the response window. If you believe a request was wrongly denied, you can file a complaint with the Texas Attorney General's Open Records Division.

For county court case records tied to Harris County arrests, contact the Harris County District Clerk or use the reSearchTX portal. Court filings and case histories are maintained by the clerk's office and are separate from booking records held by the sheriff. Both offices are public records custodians under Texas law.
