Which Jail Handles Houston Bookings

Houston does not operate its own jail for anything beyond short-term Class C misdemeanor holds. When the Houston Police Department or Harris County Sheriff's deputies arrest someone for a Class B misdemeanor or higher, that person is booked into the Harris County Jail system. Harris County operates multiple jail facilities in downtown Houston, and the Sheriff's Office manages all of them.

The main facilities are located at 1200 Baker Street, 701 N. San Jacinto Street, and 1307 Baker Street in Houston. With a combined capacity of about 9,400 inmates, Harris County runs one of the ten largest jail systems in the country. About 73 percent of the population at any given time consists of pretrial detainees who have not yet been convicted of anything.

If you are trying to find someone who was arrested in Houston, start with the Harris County Sheriff's inmate search. That system covers all people booked into any Harris County facility.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office runs an online inmate locator at harriscountyso.org. You can search by name, booking number, or state identification number. Results show the person's booking number, full name, birthdate, release date if they have been released, and the charges they are held on.

For phone inquiries, call the Jail Information Line at (713) 755-5300. This line handles jail-specific questions around the clock. You can also email jailinformation@sheriff.hctx.net for written inquiries. If you are calling from inside Houston, 311 routes to the Houston Assistance Line. From outside the city, call (713) 837-0311.

The non-emergency line for the Harris County Sheriff is (713) 221-6000. That number works if you have a question that does not involve an active emergency.

Houston Police Department Arrest Records

The Houston Police Department makes arrests within city limits but does not maintain its own jail for most offenses. HPD operates the Houston Southeast Jail at (713) 738-5300 as a short-term holding facility. People held there are typically transferred to the Harris County Jail within 72 hours for Class B misdemeanors and higher. If you cannot find someone in the county inmate search, they may still be at the city-level holding facility.

HPD police reports and arrest records can be requested through the department's records division. You can also contact Houston Municipal Courts at (713) 247-5479 for Class C misdemeanor citation records. The administration line is (713) 837-0311. The Harris County Community Supervision and Corrections Department handles probation matters at (713) 755-2700.

What Houston Booking Records Contain

A booking record is created each time someone is processed into the Harris County Jail system after an arrest in or around Houston. These records are public under the Texas Public Information Act (Texas Government Code Chapter 552).

Harris County booking releases typically show the person's full name, date of birth, booking number, and the date and time they were taken into custody. The record also includes the charges, bond amount, and custody status. Release date is added once the person leaves the facility. Physical description and arresting agency are also part of the standard record.

Some information may be withheld. Records tied to active investigations, juvenile cases, and certain personal identifiers are exempt from disclosure. Medical and mental health information is protected under separate state and federal rules. An arrest record does not mean the person was convicted. Booking releases simply document that someone entered the jail system on a given date.

The 2019 O'Donnell consent decree changed how Harris County handles misdemeanor bail. Some detainees charged with lower-level offenses may now be released faster under that agreement. That means a person's time in the jail system before release may be shorter than it was in prior years.

Harris County Court Records for Houston Cases

Court records for criminal cases arising from Houston arrests are maintained by the Harris County District Clerk at hcdistrictclerk.com. The District Clerk holds all felony criminal records for the county. You can search by party name, case number, or date range. Records show court proceedings, filings, and case dispositions.

For cases in county courts at law, which handle misdemeanors, contact the Harris County County Clerk's criminal division. Public access terminals are available at the courthouse. In-person requests let you see the full case file, not just the summary.

Arrest statistics for Harris County show property crimes leading at roughly 42,500 cases in recent reporting years, with violent crimes at about 7,300 cases. The overall crime rate has been roughly 105 per 10,000 inhabitants. About 51,000 people are booked into the Harris County Jail in a typical year.

State Resources for Houston Inmate Searches

If someone has been convicted and transferred to a Texas state prison, use the TDCJ Offender Search to find them. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice system covers all state prison units. You can search by name, TDCJ number, or state ID number. The TDCJ general information line is (936) 295-6371 or (800) 535-0283.

For statewide criminal history, the Texas DPS Crime Records Division handles name-based and fingerprint-based searches. A name-based search costs $10 and takes about 10 business days. A fingerprint search costs $15 plus a $10 FAST fingerprint fee and gives a more complete result.

Court records across Texas can be searched through reSearchTX, the statewide portal run by the Office of Court Administration. This tool is useful for finding case numbers and disposition data tied to a specific arrest. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards oversees all county jails in Texas and publishes population reports and inspection records.
